PRESS RELEASE - Fatal Traffic Collision
On Sunday, Dec. 5, 2021, at approximately 8:09 p.m., City of Santa Clara Public Safety Dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call of a person lying on the road in the northbound lanes of San Tomas Expressway, just north of the Central Expressway overpass.
While City of Santa Clara Police Department officers were en route, we received additional calls about the person being struck by at least two vehicles. When the officers arrived, they discovered a male subject lying on the ground with major injuries. The Santa Clara Fire Department pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.
The drivers of the vehicles did not see the pedestrian on San Tomas Expressway until the collisions occurred, and drivers remained at the scene following the incident. The roadway was closed for approximately eight hours while the Police Department’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit processed evidence and reconstructed the collisions. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor. At this time, the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner and Coroner’s Office has not yet identified the victim.
The Santa Clara Police Department encourages drivers and pedestrians to obey all traffic laws.
If anyone has information regarding these collisions, we encourage you to contact Traffic Investigator Stephen Selberg at (408) 615-4764. Anonymous information can be shared by calling the Anonymous Tip Line at (408) 615-4TIP (4847).
