Maryland Capitol Police - Holiday Safety Message
Holiday Safety Message
During this holiday season the Maryland Capitol Police encourages all visitors and State employees to be safe and offer a few tips to ensure you stay safe:
1. Avoid Vehicle Thefts
Most vehicle crime is opportunistic and therefore preventable. By following some straightforward advice, and working together, we can ensure that this type of crime is reduced. Some of the advice may sound obvious and rather simple but could make all the difference if you follow it consistently. The cost and the time you must spend on repairs, replacement of stolen items can be easily prevented by following some simple tips.
Remove all Valuables – Never leave ANYTHING on display when you leave your vehicle particularly shopping bags and valuables. Even loose change, cigarettes, cigarette lighters, sunglasses, CD’s, GPS’s, cell phones, stereos, cameras, and clothing can entice a would-be thief.
Park Safely –When parking at work or at local shopping, park in a well-lit open place.
2. If You See Something, Say Something
Remember to report suspicious activity. Suspicious behavior or circumstances can include, but are certainly not limited to:
• Anyone forcibly entering a car or locked area
• Someone tampering with property
• Strangers loitering or entering rooms, or offices with no apparent legitimate reason
• Someone carrying a weapon
• Strange vehicles parked in your area
• Any behavior that is out of character on State Complex
• Packages left unattended
• Suspicious or noxious odors
Report suspicious activity to the MCP Communications Center at 410-260-2911 in Annapolis or 410-767-2911 in Baltimore
3. Don’t Take Risks
Be aware of your surroundings. Don’t walk while talking on the phone and try to conceal valuables you may be carrying. Keep purses and other items close to your person and walk in well lite designated pedestrian paths or sidewalks.
Also remember, if you feel unsafe, the Maryland Capitol Police (MCP) provides an escort service for employees walking to their vehicles on our complexes. To request an escort contact the MCP Communications Center.
