Holiday Safety Tips From The South Brunswick Police Department:
The holiday season is always a special time of year. It is also a time when busy people sometimes become careless and vulnerable to theft and other crime. You can never be too careful, too prepared, or too aware. Here are a few tips to help you have a safe and enjoyable holiday.
At Home:
- Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave the house, even for a few minutes. If you have an alarm system, use it.
- If you go out for the evening, or go on vacation, turn on lights and a radio so that it looks and sounds like the home is occupied.
- Thieves will often target homes during the holiday season where they know that expensive gifts are unattended. Holiday gifts should never be displayed where they can be seen from a door or window.
- Be sure to always lock your car doors, even when your car is parked in your driveway, and always take the key fob with you.
Shopping:
- Always be alert to your surroundings. This helps you to avoid being surprised, and allows you time to react if something appears suspicious. Trust your instincts. If something seems unsafe, listen to your intuition and react immediately.
- Shop before dark whenever possible. Park in well lit, high activity parking lots, even if they are further away.
- Shopping with a friend greatly reduces your chances of being victimized. If you have to venture into a parking lot alone, ask the store for a security escort to your vehicle.
- Keep all car doors locked and take the key fob with you. Never leave your car unoccupied with the motor running.
- Have your keys in hand when walking to your vehicle so you’re not focused on finding them while standing in the parking lot. Carry a whistle or personal alarm and use it if you feel you may be in danger.
- Do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your car. This creates a temptation for thieves. If you must leave something in the car, lock it in the trunk or put it out of sight.
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Be cautious of who is around when displaying cash while making a purchase. Be alert when using an ATM machine. Be wary of “helpful” strangers. Stranger safety still applies.
- Use pocketbooks with zippers or locking flaps, and always keep them zipped and with the flap close to your body. Never leave pocketbooks unattended or in shopping carts, even for a minute. Wallets should be carried in front pants pockets or inside jacket pockets, never in your back pants pocket.
Children:
- Teach children to stay close to you at all times while shopping.
- Never allow children to make unaccompanied trips to the restroom.
- Children should never be allowed to go to the car alone and they should never be left alone in the car.
- Teach your child to go to a store clerk and ask for help in case your child is separated from you.
And never let friends drink and drive!
