Fellow Leonians:
Many of you have by now seen news reports of various viral social media postings regarding general potential threats against school districts.
It is important to remember that this is a national issue; no credible threats involving the Leonia school district have been identified.
With that said, the safety of those attending and working in Leonia’s schools is of course of utmost importance. The Leonia Police Department has been working closely with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, and the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, to ensure that we are staying on top of the latest relevant information and ensuring that we have clear visibility into both state and county preparedness efforts. Members of the Department have also been discussing the situation with the Leonia School District Administration, and I have been receiving regular updates on the situation from Chief Tamagny.
Again, no threats against the Leonia school district have been identified. However, in the interest of ensuring public safety, we are enhancing our police presence around Leonia school buildings, especially during the time periods when staff and students will be present.
We urge those of you with school-aged children to let them know that the Leonia Police Department will be very visible when they are at school tomorrow, but that they are there merely as a precaution to ensure everyone’s safety, just as we do each and every day.
