Incident:                      Man arrested for prowling after attempting to enter an occupied dwelling
Report Number:          21-0005133
Occurred Date :           December 21st, 2021
Occurred Time:           01:27 AM
Location:                     500 Block of Jade Street, Petaluma
Suspects:                     Perry Backman, a 41-year-old South Carolina resident

Incident Summary

On 12/21/2021 at approximately 1:27 AM, the Petaluma Police Department Dispatch Center received a 911 call from a resident in the 500 block of Jade Street, reporting an unknown male subject was trying to enter their home. This subject was later identified as Perry Backman.

The resident reported the Backman had jumped into their backyard and was trying to open the rear door. The resident confronted Backman and told him to leave, or he would call the police, but he said that he didn’t care and continued to try to access the occupied residence.

After Backman was unsuccessful in opening the door, he fled over a nearby fence, back into the residential neighborhood. The resident provided a detailed description of Backman, which was provided to the responding officers.

A responding K9 officer located Backman, who matched the description provided by the original reporting party and subsequently detained him. The resident assisted with the investigation and identified Backman as the person who repeatedly tried to enter his home. At his request, Backman was placed under arrest for prowling. He was later transported to the Sonoma County Jail where he was booked.

It is still unknown where else Backman may have been during this incident, and we are asking nearby residents to contact the Petaluma Police Department if they believe they were the victim of any type of theft or trespassing. Please contact the Petaluma Police Department at 707-778-4372.
