On November 24, 2021, between 5:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m., a shooting occurred near the area of Monterey Street and Leavelsey Road. A suspect in a vehicle shot at the victim’s vehicle multiple times, striking the two occupants. The victims drove to the 8200 block of Murray Avenue and called for emergency assistance.

Despite lifesaving efforts by law enforcement and paramedics, one of the victims, later identified as 43-year-old Jorge Barraza from Sacramento, died at the scene. The second victim was transported to a local trauma center with non-life threating injuries.

Through an extensive investigation, the suspect was identified as 20-year-old Nicholas Jose Carrillo, IV, from Morgan Hill.

On December 21, 2021, a warrant was issued for Carrillo’s arrest for 187(a) PC, Murder, 664-187(a) PC, Attempted Murder, and 245(a)(2) PC, Assault with a Firearm.

On the morning of December 22, 2021, the Gilroy Police Department, assisted by the Morgan Hill Police Department, the Santa Clara County Special Enforcement Team (SCCSET), the Regional Enforcement Allied Computer Team (REACT), and the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, served the arrest warrant for Carrillo in the 18000 block of Hale Avenue in Morgan Hill. Carrillo was taken into custody without incident. Carrillo was later booked into the Santa Clara County Jail.
