Borough of Leonia - FACE COVERING MANDATE AND BOOSTER CLINIC REMINDER - IMPORTANT
Fellow Leonians:
We hope everyone who celebrates Christmas had a merry, safe and healthy day. The purpose of this email is as a reminder regarding the upcoming COVID-19 vaccine/booster clinic, and to ensure that everyone is aware of the mandate, effective tomorrow (December 27) regarding face coverings.
Vaccine Clinic
All are reminded thatt we will be holding another vaccine/booster clinic on Tuesday, December 28, 2021. The clinic will be open from 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM at the Leonia Recreation Center, 370 Broad Ave. in Leonia.
The appointment system is now open; to register online for an appointment, simply visit https://covidvaccineleonia.youcanbook.me/.
The following vaccines/boosters will be available:
- Pfizer pediatric: Authorized for ages 5-11 (first vaccine only – boosters are not authorized)
- Moderna: Authorized for adults 18 years of age and older, both for first vaccine and boosters. NOTE: Regardless of the first vaccine that you received (Pfizer, Moderna or J&J, you can (and many do) receive the Moderna booster shot.
- 5-11 years of age and have never received a COVID-19 vaccine; or;
- 18 years of age or older and have never received a COVID-19 vaccine; or;
- 18 years of age or older and received the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine six (6) months ago or longer (to receive booster); or;
- 18 years of age or older and received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine two (2) months ago or longer (to receive booster).
In spite of the exponential increase in COVID-19 cases nationally, throughout our state and locally, too many people are still not taking the very basic step of ensuring that they are wearing face coverings whenever they are entering an indoor space (other than a private residence), which puts both themselves and those around them at risk of becoming infected with COVID-19.
In order to ensure that we do everything possible to protect the health and safety of all who live in and visit our community, I last Thursday issued Executive Order 2021-104 which, effective Monday, December 27, 2021, requires anyone who lives in or visits our community to wear a face covering that covers both the nose and mouth whenever they are in a retail business, restaurant, or any other indoor facility other than a private residence. Employees of these organizations must also wear face coverings.
Non-compliance can result in significant fines and, if businesses are found to be non-compliant, they can be ordered closed. None of us have any interest in seeing these penalties applied; for everyone’s health and safety, including your own, all who live in or visit our community are required and expected to wear face coverings whenever they are indoors (except when in a private residence). Again, compliance is both required and appreciated.
The current COVID-19 rate of transmission in New Jersey is 1.56, which means that each person who contracts the virus will infect at least 1.5 additional people. This rate of transmission is FAR higher than it has ever been since the start of the pandemic, which is further evidence of the need to take whatever steps we can to control the spread of the virus.
The best defense against contracting COVID-19 is to wear a face covering over your nose and mouth, and to ensure that you and all eligible members of your family are fully vaccinated and/or have received a booster (if eligible). We hope you will consider taking part in the December 28 Borough of Leonia COVID-19 vaccine/booster clinic.
Finally, to those who celebrate and on behalf of all of the members of the Borough family, we wish you a very Happy Kwanzaa. We hope to see you on December 28!
