Snow Emergency Parking Update

Snow Emergency On-Street Parking Restrictions
Motorists and residents are reminded that the City of Oneonta has a snow emergency ordinance that requires all vehicles to be removed from city streets after more than two (2) inches of snow has accumulated, until such time that the snowfall event has concluded, and the Department of Public Works has finished clearing all city streets to full width (i.e. curb to curb). Vehicles that are left on the street are subject to ticketing and/or towing at the owner’s expense. Notification of a snow emergency will be made via all local media outlets at the time of issuance. In addition, the City of Oneonta has a service that will alert those who sign up by text message on their cell
phone.

Sign up to receive a text message when snow emergency information is announced. Text “SNOWTOW” to 888777 for updates.

Anyone with questions about snow emergency parking regulations may call the City of Oneonta Police Department at 607-432-1111 or visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/oneontapolice.

Municipal Parking Lot Restrictions Lifted During Snow Emergencies
During snow emergencies, parking regulations will be lifted in all municipal public parking lots. City residents who do not have access to private off-street parking may utilize the municipal lots during snow emergencies, free of charge. Once the snow emergency has concluded, parking regulations will return to normal and on-street parking may resume. This applies to the following municipal public parking lots:

  • Municipal Parking Garage (all levels) – 433 spaces
  • Dietz St Parking Lot – 117 spaces
  • Wall St Parking Lot – 44 spaces
  • Westcott Parking Lot – 49 spaces
  • *Damaschke Field Parking Lot – 110 spaces
*Damaschke Field Snow Emergency Parking and Associated Bus Service to Center City
This winter, additional free and unrestricted snow emergency parking will be available at the Damaschke Field Parking Lot in Neahwa Park (see attached map). During snow emergencies, OPT bus service will run through Neahwa Park and make an additional stop at Damaschke Field. Anyone who parks their vehicle in this lot during a snow emergency may enjoy a free bus ride to/from the bus stops in downtown, center city and SUNY Oneonta campus. The bus will have “STATE UNIVERSITY” displayed on the digital marquee.

Anyone with questions about the snow emergency bus service to/from Damaschke Field may call Oneonta Public Transit at 607-432-1111.

Snow and Ice Removal from Sidewalks
The City of Oneonta Code Enforcement Office would like to remind property owners that snow and ice shall be removed from the sidewalk in front of their property by 9:00am each day. If ice cannot be removed from the sidewalk, then it will be permissible to be treated with ice melt, sand or other similar materials. Care should be taken to not overuse salt/snow melt as these materials can contribute to sidewalk degradation over time. Snow and ice that is removed from sidewalks and private property shall not be deposited onto a city street.

Owners with a fire hydrant in front of their property are asked to keep an approximately 5’ x 5’ area around the hydrant clear of snow and ice, to allow the hydrant to be easily located and used.
