Suspect charged after a Hit and Run collision in West Berkeley

On December 28th, officers arrested a suspect in connection with an injury hit & run collision that occurred in the intersection of Gilman Street and Tenth Street.

At 11:29 am, an 83-year-old woman was crossing Gilman Street (at Tenth Street) in the eastern crosswalk, when a vehicle making a left-hand turn (turning from Tenth Street to Gilman Street) struck the woman in the crosswalk—knocking her to the ground.  Video footage of the collision was captured by a vehicle approaching the intersection.

Emergency personnel quickly arrived at the intersection and transported the woman to a local trauma hospital.

At the scene, officers were able to obtain a description of the suspect’s vehicle from witnesses and broadcast this information for other police personnel in the area.  A few minutes later, an alert Parking Enforcement Officer (PEO) spotted the suspect’s vehicle driving on University Avenue.  The PEO followed the suspect’s vehicle until it parked in the off-street lot of a hotel on the 1700 block of University Avenue and reported this to officers in the area.

Although the driver had already left the vehicle when officers arrived, officers were able to track down the suspect after reviewing the hotel’s video surveillance.  Officers found the suspect hiding in one of the hotel rooms and arrested him without incident.

On December 29th, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged the suspect (a 58-year-old Berkeley man) with VC 20001(a)—Hit and Run causing injury, VC 12500(a)—Driving while unlicensed, and PC 3000.08—Revocation of Parole.
