Advisory

First Winter Storm of 2022. Plan for a lot, expect less than 2".

Welcome to the first winter storm of 2022! Based on current briefing estimates, we are looking at around 2". The Elsa index is at 4 with an Olaf index of 6. We may not get much snow but it will be good for snow ball making.
Please prepare for a lot of snow and be happy for a little. It's supposed to be a quick storm but let's keep inside and try to get a late start so we plan plenty of time to clean up and give the plows a chance to clear roads. Our resident weather tracker Lt. Michael McMahon has been studying the models and is looking at 1 to 2 inches possible but not likely. Allow for extra travel time and extra distance.
The entire Emergency Management Team including the Fire Chief, Business Administrator and Mayor are keeping in constant communication to be sure we are making the most educated decision when it comes to safety and travel.
Please make sure you social distance when shoveling snow.

Stay safe & warm!

Summary:
A cold front will lead to a rapid drop in temperatures through tonight. Rain will move into the region from the southwest after midnight, transitioning to snow in the early morning hours.
 Snowfall rates in excess of 1 inch per hour are possible in the heaviest snow on Monday morning. This will likely cause major impacts to the Monday morning commute. Even though roads may initially remain above freezing, higher snowfall rates will still lead to roads eventually becoming snow-covered in areas under warnings or advisories.
 There remains some uncertainty in the forecast, particularly in how far northwest the snow will move inland. Locally higher snowfall totals above 8 inches cannot be entirely ruled out where heavier banding forms.
 Gale force wind gusts are likely on the coastal waters and lower Delaware Bay with a Gale Warning in effect.
 Additional rounds of coastal flooding are expected. A Coastal Flood Warning has been issued for tidal portions of Atlantic, Cape May, and Sussex Counties.

Preparedness:

  • The entire Emergency Management Team including the Fire Chief, Business Administrator and Mayor are keeping in constant communication to be sure we are making the most educated decision when it comes to safety and travel. .
  • Residents are encouraged to prepare for the storm by securing loose items, stocking up on food and needed supplies, charging your phones, tablets, and other mobile devices, and staying off the road during the storm period.
  • Most importantly, flash flooding is very dangerous and at no time should you attempt to drive through a flooded roadway or intersection. Please avoid the flash flood prone areas. Do not park in flood prone areas. Also be mindful of the possibility of large tree limbs or trees falling due to wind gusts. There will likely be debris in roadways, use extra caution while driving after the storm subsides.
  • Know Your Flood Risk – If you live in a flood prone area, whether it be flash flooding or river flooding, you should prepare now for flood impacts. Flooding of streets, yards, and basements is possible with this storm. Have a plan and be ready to act.
  • Do not park vehicles in flood prone areas.
  • Residents are urged to stay away from any downed wires, and treat all downed wires as “live” even if power appears to be out in the area.
  • Prevention Carbon Monoxide Poisoning - Do not run any fuel-powered generators in a garage or other enclosed space or near windows. This is a good time to test battery-powered smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

Carbon Monoxide

Any gas appliance can be a source of carbon monoxide, a dangerous gas that deprives the body of oxygen, resulting in serious injury or death. Don't use a gas stove as a source of heat, as this increases the likelihood of carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure the stove is vented to the outside and the vent it not blocked. Install a carbon monoxide detector in homes where gas appliances, including gas stoves, are being used.
