San Leandro Police-Officer Involved Shooting
On Sunday, January 2, 2022, at 10:41 pm, the San Leandro Police Department received a burglary alarm call at Silverstreak, located at 1915 Fairway Drive. As officers responded to the call, a neighboring business employee also called to report a burglary in progress. The witness said several suspects were running from the business with masks on.
SLPD Officers arrived and observed a male wearing a mask running away from Silverstreak Dispensary. Attempts to detain the suspect were unsuccessful when the suspect ran into a parked getaway vehicle occupied by two additional individuals. The suspect retrieved a handgun; an SLPD officer fired his duty weapon several times.
Two individuals were shot and transported to a hospital for medical treatment. We are grateful none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening. An additional suspect was arrested at the scene.
This is an ongoing investigation, and the San Leandro Police Department will release further information as the investigation progresses.
“When an officer uses their weapon to defend against an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury, the San Leandro Police Department takes these matters as a serious responsibility that must be carried out legally, and with respect for the sanctity of life. This incident will be investigated by the San Leandro Police Department, as well as an outside independent investigator,” said Captain Ali Khan.
