Scams/Other

Zelle Scam

On Monday, 12-27-21, a 24-year old Daly City resident was a victim of a scam. The victim received a phone call where the suspect wanted to interview her for a remote administrative assistant position. The victim was instructed to download an app, Chatwork Link, and correspond with the suspect. The suspect sent the victim a job offer letter and a “USCIS” employment form to fill out. The suspect also requested pictures of her driver’s license and social security card to be sent to him. The victim had sent the items requested to the suspect. The victim was emailed a $2,430 check and asked to make a mobile deposit. The suspect also asked the victim to deposit a partial amount of $400 into her checking account. The victim was instructed to transfer $400 using Zelle to another woman, “a vendor for purchasing home working equipment.” The victim then sent the suspect a screenshot of the Zelle transfer. On 12-29-21, the victim realized she was being scammed and stopped replying to the suspect’s messages. The suspect threatened the victim by saying he had all her information, such as her social security number, driver’s license, and home address. **On-line report.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try!  www.nextdoor.com
