Call 9-1-1 If You Can, Text 9-1-1 If You Can’t

Today marks the four year anniversary of the City of Santa Clara’s implementation of Text to 9-1-1.

Text to 9-1-1 has provided another layer of service that has greatly enhanced safety for the public who cannot safely call 9-1-1 because they are in a dangerous situation, and for our residents who are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech disability.

In 2021, Public Safety Dispatcher’s received 196 texts for police, fire and medical related emergencies.

Despite text messaging being one of the primary ways that people communicate today, dialing 9-1-1 in an emergency is still the preferred way to request police, fire or medical assistance. Remember, “Call if you can, text if you can’t.”
