INCIDENT: Night Vision Goggle Hoist Rescue
LOCATION: Manker Canyon, Mt. Baldy, CA
VICTIM(S): Nolan Sheow, 22-years-old, Pasadena, CA
SUMMARY: On Friday, January 7, 2022, Sheow went skiing with a group of friends in the Mt. Baldly area. While skiing, he skied off course due to the heavy vegetation of trees. Sheow lost control and fell approximately 125 feet down the side of the mountain. During his fall, he collided with several trees and rocks, eventually hitting a large boulder which kept him from falling further down the mountain. Due to the fall, Sheow sustained a head injury.
Ski patrol located Sheow in steep, icy, mountainous terrain. San Bernardino County Fire and Sheriff's Aviation were requested to assist with a hoist rescue due to his location. Once Sheriff's Aviation Air Rescue 307 (AR307) arrived on scene, the crew determined a night vision goggle (NVG) hoist rescue would be needed due to the night time conditions and treacherous terrain. The crew chief hoisted Sheriff's Air Medic Gallant down to Sheow and the ski patrol.
Once on the ground, Air Medic Gallant assessed Sheow and he was safely placed on a medical back board. He was hoisted up in a stokes basket into the helicopter, followed by Air Medic Gallant. Due to his injuries, AR307 transported him to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where he received further treatment.
