Over the past few months, we have heard several concerns from community members about the health and safety conditions at the encampments west of Roberts Lake Road. That side of the road does not have a sidewalk and vehicles frequently drive fast along that stretch, putting the people that live there or who are walking in the bike lane at risk. Many of you have also expressed concern about the lack of public restroom facilities in the area.

In response to these concerns, the City is implementing measures next week to improve the health and safety of individuals living in the encampment and reduce the negative impacts of the encampment on the community.  These measures include:

1. Installing concrete barriers or “k-rail” and closing the bike lane along sections of Roberts Lake Road where the encampments are most dense;
2. Providing portable toilets; and
3. Continuing to provide regular trash and debris pick-ups.

City-funded homeless service providers, Homeless Outreach Services Team (HOST) and Unsheltered Friends Outreach (UFO), will continue visiting the encampment multiple times a week to offer services and housing to the people living there – and to meet more immediate needs. Additionally, the City’s Public Safety Department and SAFE team will continue to connect with individuals in the encampment and address any immediate safety concerns that arise.

Due to recent court decisions, the City is constrained in its ability to prohibit camping on public property. En los últimos meses, hemos escuchado varias preocupaciones de miembros de la comunidad sobre las condiciones de salud y seguridad en los campamentos al oeste de Roberts Lake Road. Ese lado de la carretera no tiene acera y los vehículos con frecuencia circulan rápido por ese tramo, poniendo en riesgo a las personas que viven allí o que caminan por el carril bici. Muchos de ustedes también han expresado su preocupación por la falta de baños públicos en el área.

En respuesta a estas preocupaciones, la Ciudad está implementando medidas la próxima semana para mejorar la salud y la seguridad de las personas que viven en el campamento y reducir los impactos negativos del campamento en la comunidad. Estas medidas incluyen:

1. Instalar barreras de concreto o "k-rail" y cerrar el carril bici a lo largo de las secciones de Roberts Lake Road donde los campamentos son más densos;
2. Proporcionar inodoros portátiles; y
3. Continuar proporcionando recolección regular de basura y escombros.

Los proveedores de servicios para personas sin hogar financiados por la ciudad, homeless Outreach Services Team (HOST) y Unsheltered Friends Outreach (UFO), continuarán visitando el campamento varias veces a la semana para ofrecer servicios y vivienda a las personas que viven allí, y para satisfacer necesidades más inmediatas.
