Homicide Investigators Re-Open 1993 Cold Case; Diana Cook Arrested for the Murder of Rick Hafty

INCIDENT: PC 187 – Update - Cold Case Homicide Investigation
LOCATION: 2400 Block of Bernard, Twin Peaks
SUSPECT: Diane Cook, 70 years old, Resident of Twin Peaks
VICTIM: Rick Hafty, 35 years old (at time of death), Resident of Twin Peaks
SUMMARY: On Saturday, February 27, 1993, Twin Peaks Station deputies responded to a call for service at a residence for a male subject who was shot. The gunshot victim was identified as Rick Hafty. Hafty was transported to San Bernardino Medical Center and was pronounced deceased from the gunshot wound. Homicide investigators responded to the location and conducted an investigation. At the time, investigators exhausted all leads and the case remained open.
In June 2021, investigators from the Sheriff’s Cold Case Homicide Team re-examined the case and reopened the investigation. Since June 2021, investigators conducted numerous interviews and re-examined all the physical evidence related to the investigation. Investigators identified Diane Cook of Twin Peaks as a suspect in the murder of Hafty. On Wednesday, January 12, 2022, investigators arrested Cook for the murder of Hafty and booked her into the Central Detention Center for PC 187-Murder. Bail was set at $1,000,000.00.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has a specialized team of investigators dedicated to investigating homicide cases where all leads have been exhausted and the case has grown cold. The team is comprised of Sheriff’s Detectives Eric Ogaz, Art Alvarado, District Attorney Investigator Jesse Moon, Fontana Police Detective Katie Clark, Deputy District Attorney Lloyd Masson, and Sergeant Justin Giles.
