We are hearing a lot of frustration about Roberts Lake Rd and want to address some of the questions that have been raised in response to our post about Roberts Lake Rd Safety Measures.
 
Why is the City doing this? These measures will provide a short-term improvement to safety at this site.  We don’t have a definite timeline for how long these will be in place.
 
What about the pedestrians in the street? The City is increasing public safety presence and placing a warning sign regarding speeding in the area. We know these won’t solve the problem, but they will help address it.
 
Why doesn’t the City make people move? The Federal Courts have ruled – and reinforced their ruling – that cities cannot require people to move without providing shelter or housing. There is insufficient shelter or housing options in the County in normal times, and we currently have even less available due to COVID.  
 
What’s the solution? Permanent housing is the solution. The city is already investing in permanent housing; in 2021, 54 homeless people from Rohnert Park were housed. The City also recently received a $14.7m award from the State’s Homekey program to build interim housing for 60 people (click here to learn more: www.rpcity.org/homekey)
 
What about safety concerns from closing parts of the bike lane?
We recognize these measures impact bicyclists using the bike lane along Roberts Lake Rd.  We believe the risk of someone in an encampment being struck by a vehicle is high and that providing short walking paths where the encampments are active will help reduce this risk. The portions of the bike lane that are going to be closed are only where there are active encampments in the north and in the south. In the area in between, the bike lane will remain open for use.
