Tsunami Advisory - California Coastline
Earlier this morning, an undersea volcano erupted near the nation of Tonga in the Pacific. A Tsunami Advisory (tsunami wave heights of 0.3-1.0 meter) has been issued by the National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC) for the entire California Coastal Area. According to the National Weather Service, waves are expected to arrive at approximately 8:10 am in the San Francisco Bay Area, which will correspond with high tide at 9:09am.
According to the NTWC, the maximum waves are arriving up to a couple hours following the initial arrival of the tsunami waves. This will correspond with a high tide for most of the CA coast. Extensive flooding is not expected at this time, but damaging wave activity could occur within harbors and marina.
Although large waves or extensive flooding is not expected to occur in area, we are advising residents to avoid waterways until the advisory has been cancelled because the waves could still pose a hazard to boats and swimmers.
