Advisory

Westport Office of Emergency Management has issued the following message in preparation for tonight's storm.

A significant winter storm is forecasted for Sunday night into Monday morning with the expectation of moderate coastal flooding during high tide. High wind warnings may bring dangerous downed trees, power outages, and flooding in low-lying neighborhoods. Chief Michael Kronick stated, “We encourage residents in low lying areas to move their vehicles to the Saugatuck Railroad parking lot #8 or to higher ground. If you're in your car and water comes up around you, get out and move to higher ground right away. Cars can be swept away in just two feet of moving water. Please assume all downed power lines are live and dangerous.”

Sunday Evening Storm and Impacts
Brief snow at the onset quickly changing to rain throughout the rest of the evening. Moderate to heavy rain overnight into Monday am. Strongest winds from late this evening into Monday morning at 10am. Impacts: Some minor urban and poor drainage flooding is possible due to a combination of rain, snowmelt, and frozen ground.
High Wind Warning and Impacts
Damaging Winds with potential hazards: E-SE winds 30 to 40 mph winds with gusts 55 to 65 mph. Numerous downed tree limbs. Scattered downed trees. Power outages are likely with dangerous travel conditions for high-profile vehicles.
Coastal Flood Hazards and Impacts
Widespread Moderate to locally major coastal flooding (2 to 3 ft above ground). Potential Impacts: Numerous low-lying and shoreline roads will be closed in the area, with adjacent properties taking on water. Cars may be destroyed if not moved to higher ground. Some flooding into areas that normally don’t experience flooding.
Power Outages a Major Concern
There is a possibility of accumulated ice on tree limbs and power lines which can cause them to sag or snap, leading to increased tree damage and power outages. The storm will also generate strong winds in the same area where accumulating ice is forecast. The force of these winds will add to the stress on ice-laden trees and power lines, leading to more downed trees and power outages than otherwise would happen with much lighter winds.

PRECAUTIONARY ACTIONS

If travel is essential, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Dangerous travel conditions may exist. Do not drive around barricades or through waters of unknown depth. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone properties including moving vehicles to higher ground. Please check your generators and charge your devices in the event of a power outage. Have a battery-powered radio on hand.
