Incident Summary

On Thursday, January 20, 2022, at approximately 1:31 am, the Petaluma Police Department received a call of an SUV that had collided with a tractor trailer (big rig) at the intersection of Lakeville Highway and Pine View Way.

Officers responded to the scene and discovered the driver of a red Nissan SUV collided with the tractor trailer’s diesel tank. The collision caused a large amount of diesel to leak from the tank onto the roadway. A passenger of the tractor trailer was transported to a local hospital with injures.

The driver of the SUV fled the scene on foot prior to officer(s) arrival. The driver of the SUV was described a white male adult with long hair. Officers conducted an extensive search of the area and were unable to locate the driver.

Due to the collision and the diesel spilling onto the roadway, Lakeville Highway was closed for an extended period of time for cleanup efforts. It was estimated that approximately 65 gallons of diesel spilled onto the roadway. The Petaluma Police Department wants to thank the quick response of the Petaluma Fire Department, Petaluma Public Works, Caltrans, and Sonoma County Hazmat for their efforts with the cleanup. The roadway was closed for nearly three hours while the agencies aided with the cleanup.

The Petaluma Police Department asks anyone who witnessed the collision or the subject who fled from the collision to please call (707) 778-4372.
