PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
DATE: January 22, 2022

Felonious Assault/ Barricaded Gunman

On January 22, 2022 at approximately 7am, the Norton Shores Police Department was called to the Pontaluna Shores Mobile Home Park at 1281 E. Pontaluna reference a Domestic Assault with a gun involved.

When officers arrived, they found that a female had been assaulted and a 34 yr old male had also threated her with a long gun. The female escaped out the door and ran to a neighboring mobile home. Officers set up a perimeter and attempted to call inside to talk with the male suspect. Officers did not receive an answer by phone, so the response turned into a barricaded gunman situation. The male suspect allegedly made threats to shoot police officers and to burn the home down.

The Muskegon County Emergency Response Team was called to assist with security at the scene and to evacuate residences near the home.  An armored vehicle was then used to safely escort citizens to safety. The Norton Shores Fire Department Canteen was called to provide shelter to those who were evacuated.

Once the neighbors were evacuated the Muskegon County Emergency Response Team was able to use a loud speaker to talk the suspect into surrendering.  At 11:00 a.m. the suspect walked peacefully out of the home and surrendered to the Muskegon County Emergency Response Team.

Detectives are now interviewing the suspect and conducting search warrants at the home. The suspects name will not be released until arraignment and he will be lodged in the Muskegon County jail.

The Norton Shores Police Department would like to thank the Muskegon County Emergency Response Team for their quick response in securing the scene and helping neighbors get to safety.  Also, thanks to the Muskegon County Sheriff Office, Michigan State Police, Fruitport Police, Muskegon Hts Police, and Norton Shores Fire Department for their assistance.
