Burglar arrested in Rohnert Park

On 1/26/2022 at approximately 9:00 PM, the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety received a call regarding a burglary in process in the 400 block of Santa Alicia.  The callers reported seeing several subjects climbing through a window in an adjacent apartment.  The callers knew the subjects were not the residents of the apartment.

As officers were responding to the scene, The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office helicopter (Henry 1) was in the area and offered assistance.  As they flew over the area, the crew from the helicopter saw a male subject running away from the area of the apartment.  The crew radioed officers on the ground who started forming a perimeter around the area the suspect was seen running.  The crew saw the suspect discard items into the bushes as he was running away and was able to notify the officers of the location of the items.

Officers were able to catch up to the suspect on the creek path and take him into custody without incident.  The suspect was identified as 35-year-old Joel Mendoza from Santa Rosa.

Officers were able to make contact with the victim resident who was not present at the time of the burglary.  The discarded items were collected by the officers on the scene and shown to the victim.  The victim of the burglary was able to positively identify the property as belonging to them.

During the investigation, it appeared the victim and the suspects are known to one another and this was a targeted incident, not a random act of violence.

The Department of Public Safety would like to thank the community member who called the Department of Public Safety as well as the assistance from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office and their flight crew who contributed to the apprehension of the suspect.
