Scams/Other

Gift Cards Scam

On Monday, 01-17-22, Officer Zhang was dispatched to Walgreens at the Westlake Shopping Center on a fraud. The victim reported that he had met the female suspect on the online application, “Line”, on 01-16-22. An arrangement was made where the victim would meet the suspect in person at Walgreens. The victim was to provide the suspect with various gift cards in the amount of $3,700 in exchange for sexual favors. After purchasing the gift cards, the victim spoke with the suspect, who then accused the victim of being law enforcement. The suspect asked the victim to prove that he was not law enforcement by sending her the access codes to the gift cards. The victim proceeded to send pictures of the access codes for $2,000 worth of gift cards on “Line.” The victim then received a telephone call from a male suspect, who claimed to be the female suspect’s boss. The male suspect advised the victim to send the remaining funds to them to confirm that the victim was not a law enforcement officer, to which the victim agreed. The victim asked Officer Zhang if he could be reimbursed for the $3,700. Officer Zhang advised the victim that he was unable to get reimbursed and based on his statements he was attempting to partake in prostitution, which was illegal. Officer Zhang noticed that the suspect’s phone numbers were generated by Bandwidth, a common tool for scammers to contact victims.

Zelle Scam

On Friday, 01-21-22, at 12:58 p.m., the victim received a voicemail from a suspect who claimed to be a San Mateo County Sheriff. The victim called back twice and left a voicemail. The suspect returned the victim’s call at 1:22 p.m. and stated the victim had two citations due to her missing jury duty. The suspect advised the victim to go to the San Mateo County Sheriff Department’s Federal Kiosk to amend these citations. The victim first needed to pay $2,000, which would be refunded to her after the victim got a new jury duty date. The suspect claimed if the victim did not pay, she would be detained. The victim told the suspect she would pay. The suspect told her she could pay through Zelle to their treasurer or financial department and transferred her to another line. After the victim sent the $2,000, the second suspect told her that she needed to pay $1,500 for another citation. The victim then sent another $1,500. The second suspect then asked the victim to send it again since he didn’t receive the $1,500 payment. At this point, the victim questioned whether this was a scam and hung up the phone.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try!  www.nextdoor.com
