Throughout his time with the JPD, Sergeant Vaughn held a variety of assignments, including Patrol Officer, Bike Officer, Field Training Officer, Special Operations Unit, State Line Narcotics Team, and Domestic Violence Intervention Team. He was a member of the department's Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team for ten years, serving as a SWAT Team Leader and Assistant SWAT Commander.

In 2007, Sergeant Vaughn was promoted to his current rank, supervising first, second, and third shifts over his tenure. He most recently helped lead the JPD's Patrol Shift A. In 2009, he became a Certified Public Manager through the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Sergeant Vaughn has acted as the JPD's Accreditation Manager since 2017, successfully working twice to help the department receive reaccreditation through the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Accreditation Group.

The JPD and City recognized Sergeant Vaughn's diligent work on numerous occasions, receiving the Award of Excellence in 2017, the Mighty Oak Award in 2020, and a Meritorious Service Citation in 2020.

In retirement, Sergeant Vaughn looks forward to spending more time with his family, including his wife Leslie, their daughter, Nolen, and sons, Baeden and Sam. He plans to relax, pursue his homebrewing hobby, and travel overseas to Germany. An avid outdoorsman, he will also take the opportunity to enjoy canoeing, kayaking, and hiking.

When asked what he would miss most about his job, Sergeant Vaughn shared that there was "too much to tell." He was grateful for the opportunity to do his part for Janesville and thankful for the community, conveying he has always felt the JPD has the support of it citizens.

The City of Janesville would like to thank Sergeant Brian Vaughn for his 28 years of dedicated service to his community, the Janesville Police Department, and the City of Janesville.
