Report of Someone Sleeping in a Car Leads to Arrest of Wanted Felon for Firearm Violations
San Mateo, CA – On Sunday, January 30, 2022 at 11:14 am, SMPD officers were dispatched to the 800 block of Prospect Row on report of a subject who had been sleeping in a vehicle over a period of time. Because the vehicle was increasingly surrounded by trash, a neighbor finally reported this. When officers arrived, they found subject, Joshua Gomez, sleeping in the vehicle and aroused him. In plain view, officers noticed suspected methamphetamine in the driver’s door handle. A record check revealed Gomez was on parole for firearm violations and had two outside agency no bail warrants for his arrest.
Gomez ultimately complied when asked to step out of the vehicle but became anxious and tensed his body while being placed in handcuffs. Gomez then told officers there was a gun in the car and as he was removed from the area of the vehicle, he began resisting officers, asked them to shoot him, and had to be brought to the ground to avoid being able to flee. An officer obtained a minor abrasion during this process.
During a search of the vehicle, officers located an unregistered firearm in a backpack loaded with one bullet in the chamber. Officers also located a fully loaded magazine. Additionally, officers located several credit cards that did not belong to Gomez and the investigation into that portion of this incident is ongoing.
Gomez was arrested for various charges including being a felon in possession of a loaded firearm. He was transported and booked into the San Mateo County Jail on the below charges.
