LAWTON, Oklahoma (January 31, 2022) – The Lawton Police Department requested assistance from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) after a potential first degree burglary suspect shot himself following a foot pursuit with officers.
The incident began on January 30, 2022 at approximately 2:30 p.m. when a 37-year-old man broke into a Lawton home and attempted to burglarize the homeowners. The suspect shot at the homeowners and stole their car. After a short while, the suspect abandoned the vehicle a couple of blocks away and took off on foot. The suspect broke into another home with the residents present, before being encountered on foot by police. A foot pursuit ensued, and shots were fired by police. Eventually the foot pursuit came to an end a couple of blocks later. Officers gave commands for the suspect to drop a gun, before firing bean bag rounds. It appeared the suspect then turned the gun on himself in front of several witnesses.
The suspect was transported to the hospital where he is being treated. No one else was injured during the incident.
This investigation is open and ongoing.
