Advisory

Winter Storm Watch

As weather officials track this weather system, it appears the Oxford area will receive a walloping of rain, freezing rain, and/or snow. The exact path of the system and in what form the precipitation will be is still somewhat uncertain, although it looks like freezing rain/ice is imminent, possibly up to 1/4 inch of ice accumulation. Because of that, there may be significant power outages.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW:
- MOVE CARS FROM SNOW ROUTES: If you are parked on a snow route, go ahead and move it now. If more than 3” of snow/ice are on the ground or a snow emergency is declared, we will start removing cars from snow routes—that means we will tow cars and it will cost money to get the cars back. Please plan ahead now. Attached is our map of the city snow routes. MIAMI UNIVERSITY OFF-CAMPUS STUDENTS: you can move your vehicles to the West Millett parking lot until the snow emergency ends. No permit will be required.

- DOWNED POWER LINES/TREES: This is a real possibility with ice accumulation. Trees and their limbs may break and fall, especially when coated and ice and with wind gusts (we are supposed to have significant wind Thursday and Friday.) If you see downed power lines, call 911 immediately and STAY FAR AWAY from the lines.

Also:
• If possible, DON’T DRIVE. If you must, make sure there is at least a half a tank of gas, properly inflated tires, an ice scraper, and windshield washer fluid. Keep emergency supplies in your car.
• IF YOU MUST DRIVE—go SLOW. Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Keep more distance between you and the car in front of you.
• FLASHLIGHTS: Make sure you have flashlights and batteries.
• KEEP YOUR TAILPIPE CLEAR: If snow accumulation is high enough to reach your tailpipe, do not let your car idle without clearing snow away from the exhaust. You don’t want to obstruct the exhaust and have a carbon monoxide backup.
• NO POWER/HEAT: If power is out and you have no other heat source in your home, make contingency arrangements to go elsewhere where it is warm.
• Wind chills on Friday night will be between 5 and 15 degrees BELOW ZERO. Keep pipes warmed or at a drip to prevent busted pipes.
• KEEP PETS INSIDE or set them up in covered shelter away from the wind with straw/cedar chip beds. Make sure water is not frozen.
