Please remember to keep your sidewalks clear of snow & ice for the safety of our school-aged children and all pedestrians.
The City of Westlake prides itself on being a safe and walkable community. When it snows, it is important that residents do what they can to keep the sidewalks clear of snow and ice in front of their homes for the safety of pedestrians. Among them are the many children who walk or take the bus to school. When the sidewalks are not clear, some resort to walking in the street. This can be very hazardous.
While property owners are required under Westlake Codified Ordinance (WCO) Sec. 1381.13(b) to keep any sidewalk abutting their property “free and clear of snow and ice to a minimum width of eighteen inches,” the City understands that not everyone is capable of meeting this requirement on their own. Many landscapers provide snow removal services during winter months, including some registered contractors listed on the City’s website: https://webaccess.cityofwestlake.org/buildingcontractors.aspx
When the City receives a complaint about a property owner who has not kept their sidewalk clear, the Property Maintenance Department is responsible to inform the property owner either in person and via regular and certified mail. When the City’s Property Inspector notices a sidewalk that is not clear, they may leave a doorhanger on the front door informing the owner of the need to remedy the situation.
