Suspect charged after attacking a person with a crowbar

On the night of January 27th, officers arrested a 31-year-old man after he violently attacked a person with a crowbar.

On January 27th at 8:28 pm, a man was in the area of Bancroft Way and Fourth Street when he heard the sound of windows being smashed.  On Bancroft Way, the man found several cars with their windows smashed and also spotted an RV on fire—with a man (the suspect) standing on the RV’s roof.

Using a cellphone, the man called 911 to report what was happening.  While trying to report the incident, the suspect ran toward the man with a crowbar in his hand.  While running away from the suspect, the man fell to the ground—where the suspect repeatedly struck the man with the crowbar.  After the violent attack, the suspect took the man’s cellphone and left the area.

When officers arrived, they located the suspect on the west side of the train tracks (near Bancroft Way) and arrested him.

The injured man (a man in his 60’s) was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries to his head and arms.

On January 31st, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged the suspect with PC 245(a)(1)—assault with a deadly weapon, PC 211—robbery, PC 496d(a)—receiving stolen property, as well as several criminal enhancements.
