Crime Alert Bulletin covering the week of January 24-30, 2022

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Wednesday, 01-26-22, at approximately 1:40 a.m., Officer Zhang, Officer Lajoie, Officer Rodriguez, Officer Coutts, and Officer McQuade were dispatched to the unit block of Monterey Drive on a report of a suspicious person. A neighbor had seen two males attempting to access the gate. The residence was vacant due to a fire. Officer Zhang noticed the rear gate and front door were open. Officer Lajoie noticed the side gate to the backyard was open. Based on this information, Officer Zhang requested assistance from the South San Francisco Police Department’s canine unit. After searching the residence, three suspects were arrested for residential burglary and booked into jail. One of the suspects was also arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Wednesday, 01-26-22, at approximately 1:45 p.m., Officer R. McCarthy was driving on northbound Highway 280 near Hickey Boulevard when he saw an older model Volkswagen Jetta, which he recognized as being carjacked from the Daly City BART station. Officer R. McCarthy tried to pull the Jetta over and it immediately fled at a high rate of speed. Officer R. McCarthy and other officers pursued the vehicle into San Francisco, where it eventually crashed into a parked car in the Lakeview District. The three occupants fled the vehicle on foot and two were immediately apprehended. An unregistered, loaded semi-automatic firearm with a high-capacity magazine was located in the Jetta. The apprehended driver was a 19-year old male Pacifica resident. The other apprehended passenger was an 18-year old male Hayward resident. Both suspects were booked into jail on numerous felony charges. We are continuing our investigation to identify the third suspect.

On Wednesday, 01-26-22, at approximately 7:00 p.m., Officer Moody was dispatched to the unit block of Park Plaza Drive on a report of a strong-arm robbery which had occurred at the Serramonte Shopping Center. The victim and his girlfriend arrived at the Serramonte Shopping Center to sell a pair of shoes to the suspect for $105. The victim met the suspect on the third level of the parking lot. After the suspect inspected the shoes, the victim placed the shoes back in the box. The suspect then began to look in his pockets and his friends’ belongings, advising he could not find his money. The suspect then punched the victim in the face. The victim fell to the ground, and four males proceeded to either stand around him or strike him as he covered his head. The victim’s girlfriend also tried to protect the victim by covering his body and she was also hit in the arm. The victim yelled, “Take the shoes.” The suspect took the shoes and began to record the victim while stating, “Don’t talk mess about my boy,” and then left. This investigation is continuing.

On Saturday, 01-29-22, at approximately 2:23 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Saint Francis Boulevard. The reporting party stated she came home with food for her son, who was upset. The suspect, a 28-year old Daly City resident, started fighting his sibling. The suspect broke dishes in the kitchen and doors in the home and he forcefully removed the victim’s cell phone from her jacket pocket. The suspect was arrested for felony vandalism, criminal threats, and strong-arm robbery and booked into jail.

Youth Unlimited Pilot Program

In partnership with the San Mateo County Office of Education, SamTrans is launching a six-month pilot program from January 1 through June 30, 2022. Known as the Youth Unlimited pilot program, it provides free SamTrans bus fares for Socioeconomically Disadvantaged (SED) students, as defined by the California Department of Education. SED students include students that are eligible for the Free and Reduced-Price Meal program, students experiencing homelessness, foster-youth, migrant students, and students whose parents did not graduate high school.
The overall goals of the program are to reduce transportation costs for low-income families, attract new and more frequent riders, and understand the potential operational impacts of providing free fares to some or all youth riders.

How do I get a Youth Unlimited pass?
School districts and individual schools are responsible for distributing the passes to eligible students. Contact your school if you believe you are eligible and haven’t received a pass.

What SamTrans bus routes serve my school?
Visit www.samtrans.com/schedulesandmaps/Get2School.html to see what bus routes serve each school, or call SamTrans Customer Service at 1-800-660-4287.

Will this program continue next school year?
SamTrans will evaluate the financial and operational impact of the pilot program before proposing to implement this program permanently next school year.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try!  www.nextdoor.com
