Sheriff's Office investigating assault near Muddy Creek Rd., Hilton Head; increased law enforcement presence 
At around 7:00 tonight, Friday, Feb. 4, 2022, Sheriff's Office deputies responded to Eugene Dr./Muddy Creek Rd., Hilton Head Island to a report of a man who was pistol whipped to the head.
When they arrived, Sheriff's Office deputies secured the scene for Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue paramedics to respond.
Paramedics have since transported the injured man to the Hilton Head Hospital.
In the investigation, it was learned that the pistol may have discharged during the assault.
As of this time, it is unknown whether the man's injuries resulted from being hit with the pistol or by a projectile.
Deputies and K-9 units are searching the area for the unknown subject.
The subject is described as an African-American man, tall, wearing dark clothing and a hospital-style face covering. No further description is available.
Residents and motorists near Muddy Creek Rd. can expect an increased law enforcement presence over the next few hours.
