Explosion and Fire at Marinship Park Encampment; Arrest Made by Sausalito Police
A 61-year old woman is in jail following an explosion at Marinship Park that burned two tents and endangered other residents in the outdoor facility for unsheltered members of the community.
At 7:15 PM Wednesday night, Sausalito Police officers were dispatched to the park after a loud explosion that could be heard throughout the town.
Fire officials directed officers to a tent on the Northwest side of the tennis courts with a propane tank inside that had exploded. Two tents were destroyed.
Debra Ellen Hazelwood, 61, a resident of the encampment was arrested shortly afterward. She admitted to using a cigarette lighter to set both tents on fire: the tent with the propane tank and also another nearby that turned out to be her own tent.
Hazelwood is charged with Arson 651 (c), a felony. She was booked into the Marin County Jail. Her bail was initially set at $50,000. Sausalito Police requested a bail enhancement. Her bail is currently set at $150,000.
No injuries were reported.
