DUI ARRESTS CONTINUE AFTER A BUSY WEEKEND OF DUI INCIDENTS

Last night, 3 more DUI arrests were made, one involved a traffic collision.  At 9:56 PM, Virgilio Carreno, 48 years old, from Petaluma, was called in by another motorist as a possible DUI driver.   An officer located Carreno’s vehicle on East Washington Street at Sonoma Mountain Parkway and made a traffic stop.  The officer conducted a DUI investigation and determined that Carreno was DUI.  His Blood alcohol content (BAC) was unavailable.  He was arrested and transported to Sonoma County Jail.

At 11:19 PM, Juan S. Morales, 23 years old from Petaluma, was observed by an officer driving his vehicle in circles at an unsafe speed in the intersection of Petaluma Blvd North and the Factory Outlets.  Morales briefly attempted to speed away from the officer but drove down a dead-end street.  The officer conducted a DUI investigation after observing signs of intoxication.   Morales was arrested for DUI with a .09% BAC.  He was also arrested for reckless driving and transported to County Jail.

At 1:59 AM, officers were dispatched to a vehicle roll over on Magnolia Avenue at Keokuk Street.  Officers found the vehicle unoccupied but found out a subject was seen wandering on White Oak Drive covered in blood.  Officers found Derek Zita, 33 years old from Petaluma on White Oak Drive, suffering from injuries due to the collision.  Zita was determined to be DUI, with a .14% BAC.  He was transported to Petaluma Valley Hospital and later transported to County Jail.

Since last Thursday, PPD officers have made 10 DUI arrests, with 5 of them being from traffic collisions.  Luckily, no one has been seriously injured.   The Traffic Unit tracks data from DUI arrests, such as where the driver had their last alcoholic drink.   Information such as this helps possibly identify alcohol establishments that may be overserving to patrons. Establishments that may be over serving alcohol are reported to the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.   The City of Petaluma requires all managers and servers to attend Responsible Beverage Service training if they serve alcohol.
Petaluma Police advise motorist to plan ahead if you’re going to go out and drink alcohol, designate a sober driver or share a ride.  Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
