Watchful Citizens Help Foil Auto Burglary
San Mateo, CA – On Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at approximately 3:54 a.m., San Mateo Police Department officers responded to a noise complaint at the 1300 block of West Hillsdale Boulevard. The noise was a “cracking” sound heard near a parked vehicle. The reporting party heard the noise after observing two subjects dressed in black exit an illegally parked vehicle. Upon arrival, officers observed a parked vehicle with pry marks on the top of the front passenger window. While examining the damaged parked vehicle, a citizen called SMPD Dispatch to report a person running then hiding in the bushes on 3300 block of Glendora Drive.
SMPD officers quickly arrived on scene and located two individuals. Officers found one male, identified as Mitchell Youtsay, hiding in some bushes, and a second male, identified as Bryan Hanamoto, hiding underneath a vehicle. Both Youtsay and Hanamoto were safely taken into custody.
SMPD patrol officers continued the investigation. Officers learned Youtsay was on probation and subject to search. Officers also learned Hanamoto had warrants for hit and run, fraud, and post release community supervision (PRCS) violation. Near where Youtsay was discovered, officers located wire cutters, a screwdriver, and keys of multiple types of vehicles. All items located were collected and booked as evidence. On a search incident to arrest of Hanamoto, officers found a hand tool used for weeding, a wedge tool, pocketknife, and keys for different types of vehicles. These items were also collected and later booked into evidence. Both Hanamoto and Youtsay were later booked into San Mateo County Jail for attempted burglary, conspiracy, and possession of burglary tools.
Remember, “If you see something, say something.” We encourage our community to utilize security cameras. They are especially helpful identifying suspicious activity in neighborhoods when cameras are street facing. Our officers regularly canvass for surveillance and you can help by notifying SMPD where cameras are located in your neighborhood at http://www.cityofsanmateo.org/Nest.
This remains an open and active investigation.
