Update regarding the bridge outage
Good afternoon,
The inspection has revealed issues that require immediate repair. I have been assured that Ambulance, Fire Trucks, and Police equipment can cross the bridge if and when an emergency occurs. I have spoken with the Chiefs of NICTD, Portage and National Park Service Rangers and we are all working together to get through this inconvenience. NICTD is aware of our situation and will minimize trains blocking the entrance. Officers will move the barricades in the event of an emergency.
For safety, the council has authorized extra patrols that will be stationed at the entrance to our community to direct the semi traffic. During this time, I would ask all of you to be patient. It is imperative that we work together during this time. Please allow the semi’s the time and space needed to make their wide turns onto the frontage road. Do not pass the semi’s while turning, this will result in enforcement action. While leaving our community, please be aware of incoming semi’s. Stop and allow the semi to make the turn. It is imperative to get the semi’s over the tracks and on their way as quickly as possible. Giving them adequate space to do so is the key here.
With the communities help and patience, we will get through this inconvenience. When the bridge inspection is complete, Scott Kingan and I, will attend a meeting and we will be able to provide further information regarding the repairs that are needed and long-term goals.
Again, we are not without an emergency exit. I want to thank all of you all in advance for your cooperation.
