12-year-old Student Arrested for Bringing an Unloaded Firearm on Campus

INCIDENT: PC 626.9(a) Possession of a Firearm on School Grounds
LOCATION: Oasis Elementary School, 73175 El Paseo Dr, Twentynine Palms
SUSPECT(S): 12-Year Old Male Juvenile, Resident of Cathedral City, Student in Twentynine Palms.
VICTIM(S): State of California
SUMMARY: On Wednesday, March 2, 2022, at about 10:07 a.m. Deputy E. Gonzalez responded to Oasis Elementary School for the report of a student on campus with a firearm. The school was immediately placed on lockdown procedures due to the circumstances.
Staff members at the school learned from students, a 12-year old male student had a firearm in his backpack. The firearm was immediately confiscated by a staff member and the student was promptly detained until Deputy Gonzalez arrived. The firearm was an unloaded handgun and found to be stolen from a residence in Palm Springs. After school staff and deputies determined there was no further threat to the students or staff, the lockdown was lifted and school resumed.
The student was arrested and for PC 626.9(a), and the investigation is ongoing.
