Incident: Subject Arrested for Possession of a BB gun in Steamer Landing Park.
Report Number: 22-00000864
Occurred Date : March 2nd, 2022
Occurred Time: 3:00 PM
Location: Steamer Landing Park, Petaluma
Suspects: David Mitchell (65 years old Petaluma resident)
On 03/02/2022 at approximately 3:00 PM, the Petaluma Police Dispatch Center received a 911 call from resident who reported there was a man with a gun in Steamer Landing Park. The reporting party advised they were walking near the gateway to the park, when they observed a male subject handling a handgun. The reporting party confronted the subject who was in possession of the reported firearm, and he quickly concealed it and told the reporting party to “not worry about it.”
The reporting party provided a detailed description of the suspect and his location. In order to enhance the ability of the officers to de-escalate the situation as much as possible, additional resources were called into the area. This included the Petaluma Fire Department, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office Henry-One helicopter, and K9 Officer Hansen.
Officers located the suspect, who was later identified as David Mitchell, and another subject near the gateway to the park. Both of them were initially uncooperative with officers’ commands, but eventually complied. Both Mitchell and the other subject were eventually detained without any force being used.
Witnesses on scene positively identified Mitchell as the suspect who was handling the reported firearm.
The reported firearm was located and determined to be a functioning BB gun, without any readily identifiable markings to indicate it was not a firearm. Mitchell was arrested for a Petaluma Municipal code violation that prohibits persons from possessing BB guns in a public park.
The Petaluma Police Department would like to thank the alert citizens who contacted the police department and provided detailed information.
