Man Arrested for Unlawful Fleeing, Driving with 40 Suspensions

Suffolk County Police this morning arrested a man in Bayport for unlawfully fleeing an officer at a traffic stop in Sayville.

Jemel M. Edwards was driving a 2000 Nissan Altima eastbound on Route 27 Service Road, when he was pulled over at Broadway Avenue for speeding at 10:55 p.m. last night. As the officer got out of his patrol car, Edwards sped away, heading southbound on Nicolls Road. The officer did not pursue in his vehicle, but radioed the information to dispatch.

Shortly afterwards, Fifth Precinct officers responded to a 911 call regarding an incident on Terrace Road in Bayport. When officers arrived, they observed the Nissan parked nearby, located Edwards, and arrested him at 12:02 a.m. Upon further investigation, it was determined he had 40 suspensions on his driver’s license.

Edwards, 35, of 6 North 5th St., Deer Park, was charged with Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer 3rd Degree, Operating a Vehicle without an Interlock Device, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle 2nd Degree, as well as eight other NYS vehicle and traffic violations.

The Nissan was impounded at the scene. Edwards will be arraigned at a later date.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
