The Petaluma Police Department Traffic Unit conducted its first Driving Under the Influence and Driver’s License Checkpoint of 2022.  Due to the pandemic and previous staffing issues, the Traffic Unit was unable to conduct checkpoints.  The last checkpoint was over 3 years ago. 
 
The Checkpoint was conducted on East Washington Street at Copeland Street. This location was chosen because the high number of DUI arrests in the area.  Since January 1, 2022, there have 23 DUI arrests on East Washington Street.   Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.
 
A total of 1217 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, which started at 5:30 PM and ended at 11:30 PM due to the rain.  971 vehicles were screened and out of those 18 were further evaluated for DUI and 15 for driver’s license violations.  One suspect was arrested for DUI, seven suspects for driving while unlicensed, and one suspect for possession of an open container of alcohol in a vehicle.  One vehicle was towed.  
 
This DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint lowers DUI deaths and injuries.  A major component of these checkpoints is the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired. It also brings about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers or ride share.    Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
