Enjoy St. Patrick’s Day Responsibly, Don’t Drive Impaired! The Moorpark Police Department and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office are reminding you to enjoy Saint Patrick’s Day responsibly and not drive impaired. The Moorpark Police Department and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office will be staffing additional personnel for the purposes of Driving Under the Influence (DUI) detection and enforcement. Each year on St. Patrick’s Day, there is more than a 170% increase in beer sales (according to wallethub.com). Which means there is also an increased chance of encountering an intoxicated driver. On St. Patrick’s Day in 2019 there were 57 people killed nationwide as a result of a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) traffic crashes, a rate of one fatality every 38 minutes. Each one of these deaths was avoidable using a designated driver or taxi service. The cost of an Uber or Lyft ride pales in comparison to that of a DUI. DUI is more than just alcohol. Marijuana, prescription medication and illicit drugs also impair your ability to operate a motor vehicle. As we celebrate on St. Patrick’s Day, remember to have fun in a responsible way and don’t drive impaired. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. |
