Fatal Vehicle Versus Pedestrian Traffic Collision on North Texas Street Friday Morning
This morning around 6:23 am, Fairfield Police Department received a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian collision in the 2200 block of North Texas Street. Officers arrived on scene and found the pedestrian suffering from major injuries. The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The Fairfield Police Department’s Traffic Unit responded and took over the investigation, which is still ongoing. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and cooperated with investigators. There is no evidence of impairment or that speed had any factor in the collision. No other information is available at this time.
North Texas Street has reopened to traffic in both directions.
Incidents like this are a sobering reminder for motorists and pedestrians alike. Pedestrians, please abide by the traffic laws. Use crosswalks and controlled intersections to cross roadways. Look both ways and verify it is safe to cross whether you have the right of way or not. Motorists, please watch out for pedestrians and yield whether you have the right of way or not. As a community, we all want to avoid tragic events like this from unfolding.
Pedestrian Safety
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration offers the following safety tips for pedestrians while walking in public places:
- Be predictable; follow the rules of the road and obey signs and signals.
- Keep alert at all times; don’t be distracted by electronic devices that take your eyes (and ears) off the road.
- Whenever possible, cross streets at crosswalks or intersections, where drivers expect pedestrians. Look for cars in all directions, including those turning left or right.
- If a crosswalk or intersection is not available, locate a well-lit area where you have the best view of traffic. Wait for a gap in traffic that allows enough time to cross safely; continue watching for traffic as you cross.
- Never assume a driver sees you. Make eye contact with drivers as they approach to make sure you are seen.
- Be visible at all times. Wear bright clothing during the day, and wear reflective materials or use a flashlight at night.
- Watch for cars entering or exiting driveways, or backing up in parking lots.
