SMPD Digital Forensic Specialist Receives Forensic Partner Award from U.S. Secret Service

San Mateo Police Department Digital Forensic Specialist recognized for her support and contributions to the investigative and protective responsibilities of the U.S. Secret Service.

San Mateo, CA – On Tuesday, March 15, 2022 a special presentation was held at the San Mateo Police Department, whereas, our Digital Forensic Specialist, Annette Bingham, received the Forensic Partner Award, presented by two Special Agents of the U.S. Secret Service, in recognition of the amazing work she has been doing on behalf of our department in the area of digital evidence examinations.

The San Mateo Police Department is one of 60 law enforcement agencies in the San Francisco region of the Cyber Fraud Task Force, a special task force of the U.S. Secret Service, dedicated to increasing “*the resources, skills and vision by which state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies” combat criminal activity.

“Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge (ATSAIC) Vinh Tran and I (ATSAIC Dahlia Morris) visited the San Mateo Police Department Tuesday, 03/15/2022, to present Annette Bingham with an award in appreciation of her exceptional level of assistance in completing forensic partner reporting (digital evidence examinations) for the U.S. Secret Service Northern California Cyber Fraud Task Force. Out of the 60 Digital Evidence Forensic Partners in the San Francisco District (including San Francisco, San Jose and Sacramento) who participated in this program in FY21, Annette Bingham completed 426 total forensic exams with 56.18 TB’s of data. The next highest number of exams completed was 229 total forensic exams with 31.22 TB’s of data.”

SMPD Digital Forensic Specialist Bingham, hired in 2015, was brought in to assist our agency with the increasing number of digital devices collected as evidence. *“Computers and other electronic devices are now facilitators of criminal activity.” The information they yield is immense and are likely able to provide investigators critical information such as a subject’s whereabouts, their intent, relationships to others, as well as actual evidence of a crime depicted in photos, videos and the like.

This evening at 7pm, the San Mateo City Council will recognize the San Mateo Police Department Digital Forensic Unit (Annette Bingham) during the ceremonial portion of the council meeting. U.S. Secret Service Special Agent in Charge (SAIC) Shawn M. Bradstreet will be attending and will give brief remarks.
