On Monday, March 21, 2022, a group of doctors, nurses, mental health specialists, and substance abuse counselors met at the Emergency Operations Center of the Simi Valley Police Department. After a short briefing, this group of professionals, along with Officers and Police supervision, went out into the homeless community to provide assistance through a program called Backpack Medicine funded by Ventura County. 
 
Between the hours of 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM, Backpack Medicine volunteers were guided by Simi Valley Neighborhood Resource Officers to various homeless encampments throughout the city. These Officers, who have established ongoing positive relationships with the homeless, made the introductions to the Backpack Medicine staff. Several homeless individuals were contacted and provided needed medical services and counseling. At least one of the homeless individuals will be further assisted through Ventura County One-Stop later this week. 
 
Backpack Medicine is instrumental in helping homeless individuals find assistance with vaccinations, wound care, diabetes, hypertension management, mental health, and substance abuse disorders. Assisting with obtaining better health, mental health, and prevention of disease escalation for the homeless is a step with the ultimate goal of locating permanent housing. This event is part of the Police Department’s ongoing commitment to finding solutions for the city’s homeless community. Backpack Medicine outreach in Simi Valley will continue with future events.
