License Plate Recognition Camera Hit Leads To Pursuit And Arrest
On Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at approximately 8:39 AM, the Sausalito Police Department received an alert from our License Plate Recognition cameras of a stolen vehicle entering Sausalito from the 300 block of Spencer. The vehicle, a 2007 GMC Sierra, had been stolen out of Oakland on March 21, 2022.
Sausalito Police Officers responded immediately and began to search for the GMC. At approximately 8:47 AM, Corporal Mather located the GMC on the Spencer Frontage Road and attempted to make an enforcement stop. The GMC, which was occupied by one person, failed to stop and accelerated onto Northbound Highway and a pursuit ensued.
The pursuit, which consisted of one Sausalito Police vehicle and one Marin County Sheriff’s vehicle, covered approximately six (6) miles and reached speeds of approximately 90 MPH. The pursuit ended, when the GMC exited at the Paradise off ramp in Corte Madera and crashed into a concrete center divider and light pole within the parking lot of The Village Shopping Center. The accident caused damage to the center divider, light pole, and GMC but no one was injured.
After the collision, the driver (later identified as Jose Gabriel OLIVA-LEMUS a 35-year-old resident of Oakland) fled the scene of the accident on foot. After a short foot pursuit, Corporal Mather with the assistance of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office and the Central Marin Police Authority, took OLIVA-LEMUS into custody without incident. A wants/warrants check revealed that OLIVA-LEMUS was on active probation out of Alameda County for evading police in a vehicle.
OLIVA-LEMUS was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle, evading police in a vehicle, hit and run, reckless driving, and resisting/obstructing officers. Due to OLIVA-LEMUS being involved in a car accident, he was transported to the Marin Health Medical Center for a routine medical clearance and was later booked into the Marin County Jail.
Since the City of Sausalito’s License Plate Recognition Camera program became operational on Thursday, May 18, 2017, sixty-three (63) stolen vehicles have been recovered and sixty-nine (69) individuals have been arrested for various crimes.
