Coronavirus (COVID-19) Seven Hundred Fifty-Fourth Update, Thursday, March 31, 2022

Albany County’s COVID-19 dashboard indicates that there were 52 new positive cases overnight in the County, which raised the County’s COVID-19 cumulative pandemic total to 63,145 positive cases.  The County’s seven-day average of new daily positive cases increased from 48.4 to 49.8 cases.  The number of County residents in the hospital due to COVID-19 symptoms decreased by two to now 11 patients, with one patient in the ICU.  The County’s pandemic death toll remained at 538.

State DOH reported that the County’s rate for one vaccine dose as of yesterday was 81.4% of the County’s total population and 89.8% of the adult population, and the County’s rate for full-vaccination was 74.2% of the total population, and for boosters was 64.3% of the eligible population.  The State’s rate for one dose was 89.6% for the total population and 95.0% of adults, and the State’s rate for full-vaccination was 76.2% for the total population, and for boosters was 56.1% of the eligible population.

The State’s COVID-19 website reported that yesterday’s results for 152,167 tests Statewide were 4,493 or 3.0% positive, with the seven-day average increasing to 2.6%.  The Capital Region had 5,531 tests of which 164 or 3.0% were positive, with the seven-day average remaining at 3.5%.  The County had 1,124 tests of which 52 or 4.6% were positive, with the seven-day average increasing to 3.8%.

Governor Hochul announced today that the State’s positive rate for tests was 2.95%.    Other COVID-19 data included hospitalizations (825, +8), new admissions (138), ICU patients (134, +4), intubations (56, -2), and deaths (8).

The Governor also announced that nearly 70 million COVID-19 at-home test kits have been distributed by the State, and that the State would scale down testing sites.  She added that the testing sites could be quickly reopened if necessary.  There are now 1,910 registered locations to obtain a test in the State.  The Governor added that the State’s 15 vaccine sites would remain open and that persons “over the age of 50 are encouraged to get a second booster in accordance with the recently expanded CDC guidance.”

As part of the new phase of “living with the virus,” the Federal government launched a new website at covid.gov where infected persons can quickly find no cost treatment as part of the “test-to-treat” program.  The website purports to centralize access to wide-ranging COVID resources including vaccine and testing sites, and the latest travel guidance.

The Guilderland Public Library has two very interesting virtual seminars on the evening of Monday, April 11.  As I had previously noted, from 6:30pm to 7:45pm, there is a virtual roundtable discussion about the relations between Russia and Ukraine, with a historical context, current conditions, and next steps.  The seminar, with an opportunity for questions, will be led by Professor Kristin Bidoshi at Union College’s Department of Russian and Eastern Studies.  You can sign-up online for the free Zoom discussion.

At 7:30pm that same evening, Dr. Jane Goodall and Douglas Abrams are participating in an online conservation about their book, “The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times.”  Dr. Goodall is considered the world’s foremost naturalist and Mr. Abrams is the co-author of the bestselling “Book of Joy.”  You can pick-up a copy of Book of Hope at the Library or curbside pick-up by emailing [email protected] or calling (518) 456-2400 ext. 3.  You can register for the Zoom discussion online.

Thank you for staying safe and calm.
