SUBJECT: Report of a Suspicious Backpack Near Bret Harte High School Leads to Evacuation of the Campus and Nearby Businesses / ACPD Case # 22-0138

On April 1, 2022 at approximately 2:00 PM, the Angels Camp Police Department received a report of a suspicious backpack near the Bret Harte Campus. All persons on the Bret Harte Campus and surrounding businesses were immediately evacuated to a safe location.
Units from the Angels Camp Police Department, Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office, and the Angels Camp Fire Department searched the campus and found it to be safe and clear of any possible threats. No suspicious backpack was located. The Bret Harte High School campus and surrounding businesses returned to their normal schedule at approximately 2:45 pm.
It is believed that this was a false report and the person reporting the threat called from a spoofed phone number. Spoofing is when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to caller ID to purposely disguise their identity.
The Angels Camp Police Department takes any threat of the safety of our community seriously. Angels Camp Police Department officers are currently investigating the origin of the call to identify the involved parties.
