Incident Summary
On April 4, 2022, at 5:45 PM, the Petaluma Police Department received a report of vandalism in the handball court at Meadow Elementary. The reporting party, a concerned community member, told police dispatch three juveniles were near the school handball court vandalizing the handball court. He witnessed one of the juveniles writing racially derogatory graffiti on the wall with a marker.
Officer arrived on scene and located the three juveniles. The community member remained in the area and positively identified the juvenile responsible for writing the derogatory graffiti. The juvenile was subsequently detained, issued a juvenile referral form, and released to the custody of his parents.
Officers attempted to remove the graffiti from the handball court; however, the graffiti was written using a permanent marker. Officer spoke with school staff to have the graffiti removed.
Due to the nature and content of the graffiti, the incident will be evaluated by a Petaluma Police Department Detective that specializes in Hate Crimes Investigations. The Petaluma Police Department wants to thank the community member for reporting this incident and helping identify the responsible person.
