SCPD Use of Nixle for Emergency and Community Notifications
The Santa Clara Police Department engages with community members through a variety of social media platforms for the purpose of communicating events and opportunities to provide feedback, providing helpful information and updates, advising followers of police activity and traffic advisories, humanizing our staff and department, and crisis communication.
In most situations, the Police Department disseminates each of its messages to the public on all of our platforms: City/Police Department website, GovDelivery, Facebook, Nextdoor, Nixle and Twitter. Doing so, was the request of our residents when we began initiating our social media presence in 2013. While this has allowed our followers to choose the way in which they receive our messaging and/or interact with our Department, it is not the intended use of Nixle.
Moving forward, the Police Department plans to reduce the use of Nixle to the following instances:
- Severe weather
- Police activity in progress
- Traffic advisories
- Missing person
- Inform or seek assistance from the public on criminal activity
- Local events
This transition will be gradual in the coming months to allow our followers to expand the way in which information is received from our department.
Follow our Department via your platform(s) of choice, and if you do not receive alerts from the Santa Clara Police Department via Nixle, subscribe to do so online.
