In the City of Oakland, overall robberies are down more than 15% year to date (YTD).  However, over the last few weeks, the Oakland Police Department (OPD) is receiving an increase in the number of reports of armed thefts in various Oakland communities.

We are issuing this safety advisory to inform you of this alarming shift.
 
The current trend is an uptick in the number of people robbed at gunpoint in residential neighborhoods. The thefts are happening across Oakland at various hours throughout the day and night.  In some recent cases, armed individuals approach victims as they enter or exit vehicles or homes.  The armed individuals rob the victims of their personal property and leave the area on foot or by vehicle.  
 
The Department is closely tracking this current trend, including descriptions of those responsible and their vehicles.  If you are a victim or have information regarding those who may be responsible for these violent crimes, please call 510-238-3326.
 
REDUCE YOUR RISK:
The Department remains vigilant of the numerous incidents occurring in Oakland and urges you to be aware of your surroundings at all times:
  • Don’t be distracted by your electronic devices.
  • Do not resist/Property can be replaced.
 
OPD’S COMMITMENT:
  • OPD Commanders are deploying more officers in the parts of Oakland where the increase in armed robberies is occurring.
  • OPD’s Violent Crime Operations Center (VCOC) and Patrol Division are using intelligence-led policing to identify and arrest those responsible.
 
Working together, we can reduce violence in Oakland.
