Supervisor Barber's Coronavirus (COVID-19) Seven Hundred Sixty-Third Update (Saturday, April 9, 2022)

The Albany County COVID-19 dashboard reported that there were 83 new positive cases overnight in the County, which raised the County’s COVID-19 cumulative pandemic total to 63,780 positive cases.  The County’s seven-day average of new daily positive cases increased from 64.8 to 66.6 cases.  The number of County residents in the hospital due to COVID-19 symptoms increased by two to now 17 patients, with three patients remaining in the ICU.  The County’s pandemic death toll remained at 541.

State DOH reported that the County’s rate for one vaccine dose as of yesterday was 81.5% of the County’s total population and 89.8% of the adult population, and the County’s rate for full-vaccination was 74.3% of the total population, and for boosters was 65.9% of the eligible population.  The State’s rate for one dose was 89.7% for the total population and 95.0% of adults, and the State’s rate for full-vaccination was 76.3% for the total population, and for boosters was 56.4% of the eligible population.

The State’s COVID-19 website reported that yesterday’s results for 132,057 tests Statewide were 5,516 or 4.2% positive, with the seven-day average increasing to 3.7%.  The Capital Region had 4,021 tests of which 257 or 6.8% were positive, with the seven-day average increasing to 5.0%.  The County had 1,010 tests of which 69 or 8.6% were positive, with the seven-day average increasing to 6.5%.

The State’s other COVID-19 data included yesterday’s positive rate for tests (4.18%), hospitalizations (1,009, +15), new COVID-19 hospital admissions (195), ICU patients (130, +2), intubations (61, +5), and deaths (9).

You might find of interest a recent article about why some family members, particularly young children, show no signs of COVID-19 infection when living with adult family members with symptomatic cases.   A CDC analysis found that 58% of the nation’s 42 million children have been infected but the nation has only recorded 13 million pediatric cases.  The other 29 million infected children were likely asymptomatic and not reported.   One theory is that children are likely to have “recent” exposures to other coronaviruses, such as the common cold, which generated immune cells to fight off COVID-19.  And because all viruses are still “new” for children, their immune cells more rapidly respond to the perceived threat.  It is an interesting article to read on a rainy Saturday.

A reminder that on Tuesday, April 12 at 8am, there is a Coffee with the Planner at Town Hall, with light refreshments and coffee.  The informal setting will include a behind-the-scenes look at daily work by Town Planner Ken Kovalchik and his colleagues, with an update on the recently adopted conservation easement program, current development activity, and planned updating of the Town’s comprehensive plan.  While facemasks are not required, we continue to strongly recommend and encourage the wearing of masks during indoor public meetings.  Please also register in advance for this event by emailing Jessica Montgomery at [email protected].

I hope that, despite the persistent rain, that you are still having an enjoyable and relaxing weekend.  The NY Mets are undefeated (2-0), with 160 games still ahead.  You have to find optimism somewhere.

Thank you for staying safe and calm.
